Sample data gives an object a small, illustrative extract of the data it describes. The sample displays as a table on the object page, with paging, filtering, and sorting.
Sample values are not indexed for search. They appear only in the object’s sample-data table and never in global search results.
Where sample data comes from
Users with edit rights on an object can upload a sample as CSV or JSON file content. Three upload channels are available:
- Object page: On an editable object, the sample-data table shows an Upload sample data button. Upload the file (CSV or JSON). For CSV, specify the delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe), and whether the first CSV row is a header. After a successful upload the table reloads with the new sample.
- REST API: Send a multipart request to
api/external/sample-data-upload/{objectId}with thefileto upload. Optional parameters:format(csvorjson, inferred from the file extension when omitted),delimiter, andhasHeader. - AI assistant (MCP): The
sample_data_uploadtool uploads a sample to an object, and thesample_data_readtool retrieves the current sample’s columns and rows. For more information, see Dawiso Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Uploading a new sample replaces the previous one completely. There is no history of past samples and no separate delete action.
Supported formats and validation limits
Dawiso validates the whole upload before saving it. If any value violates a limit, the upload is rejected, the existing sample stays untouched. The error message describes the incorrect row and column.
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| File size | Maximum 100 MB |
| Rows | 1 to 10 000 |
| Columns | Maximum 50 |
| Column names | The names uniqueKey, objectId, columns, fileName, uploadedBy, uploadedDate, and data are reserved and rejected |
| Value length | Maximum 2 000 characters per value |
| CSV delimiter | Comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe |
| CSV format | Standard quoting (RFC 4180), UTF-8 encoding |
| CSV row width | A data row cannot contain more fields than the header row — rows with fewer fields are allowed, and the missing cells stay empty |
| JSON format | Array of flat objects — numbers and booleans are converted to text, nested structures are rejected |
Column names in the table come directly from the CSV header or the JSON field names, and cannot use the reserved names listed above — those are kept for the sample’s internal metadata. The check is case-sensitive: Data is a valid column name, data is not. If a CSV file has no header row, Dawiso generates column names column_1 to column_N.
Permissions
Uploading a sample requires edit permission on the target object. The AI assistant (MCP) acts under your own identity, so the same rule applies to uploads made on your behalf. Viewing is unchanged — anyone who can open the object can see its sample data.
